India has “the highest number of cases of employment-related inconsistencies” on the globe helped by the blatant proliferation of advertisements where fake degrees from any college in the world can be bought for a few hundred dollars, according to the article ‘Watch out for fake degrees’ available on TheHindu.com at http://m.thehindu.com/features/education/watch-out-for-fake-degrees/article5743087.ece/.

TheHindu.com report provides the following extract as an example from one of the many advertisements blatantly promoting fake degrees in India: “You can now apply for a job in any MNC in India or abroad. Get a diploma, degree or a certificate from any major university today. Professional degrees from top engineering, law, MCA, MBA or design institutes are also available.”

TheHindu.com cites a recent global background discrepancy survey that revealed 50 percent of all the job applicants forged their previous job experience certificates. In some employment sectors, such irregularities with previous education and employment were as high as more than 70 percent. The survey was carried out globally with data collected from the employment logs of various industries.

However, TheHindu.com reports identifying fake degrees “can be a daunting task” since forgers have discovered the right kinds of stationary, paper, ink, and stamps to use making it extremely difficult to differentiate between a genuine degree and a fake one. In addition, some fake degrees are issued with the help of university officials themselves for the price of a few hundred dollars.

Fake degrees in India show why U.S. companies need to conduct international background checks on job applicants who have lived, worked, and studied abroad. To help teach global due diligence, Attorney Lester Rosen, CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), has co-authored ‘International Employment Background Checks’ with Lisbeth Claus, Ph.D., Professor of Global HR at Willamette University.

In the ‘International Employment Background Checks’ module, Rosen and Claus – Editor-in-Chief of the Global HR Practitioner Handbook Volumes 1 and 2 – review the challenges, barriers, strategies, and practical tips of conducting international employment background checks. In addition, Rosen will present a session titled ‘International Background Checks: Exercising Due Diligence in Hiring Around the World’ at a Global Business News Talent Conference at Bell Harbor International Conference Center Bay Auditorium in Seattle, WA on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 10:45 a.m. Pacific Time.
