Attorney and safe hiring expert Lester Rosen, Founder and CEO of background check firm Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), will present the hour long webinar ‘International Background Checks’ with Avant Resources on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM Eastern/12:00 PM Noon Pacific. To learn more, visit http://www.esrcheck.com/Newsletter/ESR-Speaks/International-Background-Checks-179/.

“Employers can be the subject of lawsuits for negligent hiring if they hire someone that they should have known, through the exercise of due diligence, was dangerous, unfit, or unqualified,” says Rosen, author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ a guide to background checks. “With the mobility of workers across international borders today it is no longer adequate to conduct screening only in the United States.”

A significant percentage of the U.S. population consists of immigrants. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were 25 million foreign-born persons in the U.S. labor force in 2012, comprising 16.1 percent of the total. The BLS News release ‘FOREIGN-BORN WORKERS: LABOR FORCE CHARACTERISTICS — 2012’ is available at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/forbrn.pdf.

Rosen will guide employers through international background checks, including the legal, practical, and cultural challenges employers face when obtaining information outside of the U.S. He will explain in detail the ins and outs of international criminal records, terrorist databases, and whether background checks are needed on applicants with a valid visa. During this presentation, participants will learn:

  • Why international background checks are becoming a necessary tool for all employers.
  • What tools are available to international employers.
  • The limitations of international background checks.
  • The complex verification process of international employment and education.
  • How to protect your company against fake international degrees.
  • The legalities of data protection and privacy including rules of the European Union and Canada.

Webinar benefits include 1.0 hour of HRCI-approved credit, a live question and answer session, and a complimentary copy of the speaker’s presentation slides. Rosen is a frequent presenter nationwide on pre-employment screening and safe hiring issues for the ‘ESR Speaks’ background check training program. A list of future speaking dates is available at http://www.esrcheck.com/ESR_Speaks.php.
