The total number of security officers deployed for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5, 2016, to August 21, 2016, has increased significantly just days before the opening ceremonies, according to a report from CNN.

CNN reports nearly 14,000 members of the Rio military police – a third more than originally planned – will be deployed during the Olympic Games as part of 85,000 security officers in the city and in addition to members of the Brazilian Armed Forces, Navy, and out of state police.

Other security measures for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games include more than 3,000 vehicles used for policing and “three blimps spread throughout the city that will transmit high resolution images in real time,” CNN reports.

CNN also reports Brazil’s National Security Forces will take over the job of a security company contracted to monitor X-ray machines and guard entrances at the Olympic Games after the company recruited only 500 workers when a staff of 3,400 was needed.

One man hired to run the machines told CNN his own concerns about the recruitment process. He said he was not asked to provide proof he had no criminal record and that he and other workers had only to complete a brief online course in order to be deemed qualified.

CNN reports that Olympics chief Thomas Bach indicated he “has full confidence in Rio to maintain security” during the Olympic Games. The complete report is available on the CNN website at www.cnn.com/2016/08/02/americas/rio-de-janeiro-security/.
